Tanya Cowie BA- Anthropology: Certificate in TESOL; Socio-Cultural Training; Intercultural Certificate, UBC; IDI Qualified Administrator
Tanya first started teaching English overseas in West Africa and Japan. She then moved back home, studied in the TESOL program at VCC and has taught English as an Additional language to new immigrants at VCC for over 20 years. She has a certificate in Intercultural Communication and has been co-facilitating IC workshops. Inspired by her students, Tanya is keen to learn more about Intercultural Communication to develop her own IC Competence and to help her students adjust to life in a new culture. She is also a qualified administrator for the Intercultural Development Inventory and a conference junkie.
“It is important we start with our similarities. For example, within culture in the workplace, because this is not their underlying culture but the work’s inherent culture. It has to start small because people are not necessarily there… we might be working with people who experience culture shock, who are not seekers, who are not already there. We need to start small”
I am here to tell you that culture is a cornerstone, one that can help you feel anchored to this beautiful Earth, this “Pale Blue Dot” Carl Sagan spoke of. It’s what keeps you from feeling lost in strange and exciting new lands, the first thing you share when it’s time to start anew and set roots somewhere else.
Yamila is a Biology student currently completing her last term of her Undergraduate degree at the University of Victoria. She is originally from the Dominican Republic.
