Introducing SIETAR BC Board - Dawn Wilson
SIETAR BC board member
Dawn Wilson currently works in a K-12 independent school as the Director of Education Extension and International Programs. She organizes all of the study abroad for domestic students, as well as customized short-term programs for visiting international students. She is a qualified administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), and the Global Competencies Inventory (GCI), and she is interested in the measurement of intercultural competency. She has attended the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication (SIIC) in Portland three times, once as a Fellow. She recently completed UBCs certificate in intercultural studies. Dawn holds a B.A. with Honours, a Post-Degree Professional Teaching Certificate (PDPP), a Certificate in Online Education, and an MBA in International Business
“It is important we start with our similarities. For example, within culture in the workplace, because this is not their underlying culture but the work’s inherent culture. It has to start small because people are not necessarily there… we might be working with people who experience culture shock, who are not seekers, who are not already there. We need to start small”
I am here to tell you that culture is a cornerstone, one that can help you feel anchored to this beautiful Earth, this “Pale Blue Dot” Carl Sagan spoke of. It’s what keeps you from feeling lost in strange and exciting new lands, the first thing you share when it’s time to start anew and set roots somewhere else.
Yamila is a Biology student currently completing her last term of her Undergraduate degree at the University of Victoria. She is originally from the Dominican Republic.
